The prosecutors in catalonia has ordered the seizure of ballot boxes, election flyers or any item, that could be used for the referendum approved by the Spanish region’s separatist executive.
The referendum is being set for to hold on October 1st and the masses in Catalonia are very strong- minded in going ahead with the referendum despite Madrid’s refusal and a court ban, as the struggle between Catalonia and Spain’s central government intesifies dramatically.
On Tuesday,a meeting was held in the prosecutors office in Barcelona, between the chiefs of the Guardia Civil, the National Police forces, and of the Mossos d’Esquadra which is the police force of the Catalonian goverment.
Orders were given for action against authorities, civil servants or individuals in order to avoid offences being committed.
According to the Spanish law, prosecutors have the power to give instructions to judicial police forces in investigating offences, so as the judges.
“Police officer will directly utilize the measures necessary to seize resources intended in holding an illegal referendum,” they said in the statement.
Definitely, they ordered the police to seize items such as “electoral envelopes, ballot boxes, instruction manuals for members of polling stations, election flyers, election propaganda.”
Carles Puigdemont the executive of Catalonia pro-independence,called the referendum last week and they have vowed to see it through despite receiving a ban from the Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s conservative government and the Constitutional Court.
The Prosecutors have already launched an official complaint against Carles Puigdemont and his government members, accusing them all of civil disobedience, misfeasance and misappropriation of public funds.
The order being given to the Mossos d’Esquadra leaves them in a particular tough spot, because by law they have to follow prosecutors orders, but they are directly dependent on the Catalonian regional goverment which they have been to act against.
Throwing more light on that aspect of loyalty,Justice Minister Rafael Catala told Spanish television that “the Mossos are there to serve citizens, all of them, not just a few.”
Meanwhile Carles Puigdemont has asked, that the Catalan police force be left alone.
“Their main function is to keep people safe,” he told Rac1 radio. “That’s their priority,” he added, refusing to say whether he would in turn tell the Mossos to disregard prosecutors’ orders.
Catalonia being a region proud of its own language and identity, and also one Spain’s richest and most highly industrialized regions has for a very long time notured the mindset of its independence.
The feeling of seperation is being fed by memories of Franco dictatorship, which made an effort to suppress the identity of Catalonia and this is cleary expressed in the fierce rivalry between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid,Spain’s top football clubs.
