Earlier this year the city of London breached its annual air pollution limits. What was termed by the campaigners “a shameful reminder of the severity of London’s air pollution.”A well known firm in London suggested that the use of timber buildings in london could help the city solve its housing shortage issue and also help in reducing carbon emmissions.
Andre Waugh,a founding partner at Waugh Thistleton, shared his view about the use of timber buildings in London. “We need to change the way we live for climate change.”
Buildings are responsible for approximately 45% of carbon emissions in the U.K. but very little attention is paid to the role of construction materials, he added.
In east London,Waugh Thistleton which is very supportive for the use of timber buildings in london, has just built a 10-story,17000-square foot structure entirely made of timber. This is said to be world’s largest construction made from cross laminated timber. This material according to architect is not prone fire hazard. The material is made from squeezing together sheets of lumber using a strong adhesive and a powerful hydraulic press.
Greener,lighter and saves on space
Timber is considered to be more favourable to the environment than materials such as cement and steel, which generates greenhouse effects and consumes lots of sand and water.
Trees are part of renewable resources which has special ability of replacing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere with oxygen.
The idea for the use timber buildings in London is very encouraging because timber has a weight advantage over concrete it enables more floors to be built on a single piece of land thereby enabling space in a dense city like London.
Buildings made of timber have thinner walls and flooring panels than that made of concrete allowing larger living spaces. The use timber buildings in London is considered an economical approach, because it has been discovered that timber building panels helps keep heat in,which saves on energy bills.
The use of timber buildings in London is a very good idea, because timber tends to keep the structural integrity of buildings than materials such as steel.
